Every Malaysian Can Be A Malay / Bumiputra

It is interesting how DS Najib mentioned that everyone can be a Malay or Bumiputra. An Indian Muslim can be Malay, Chinese can be Malay and “Mat Salleh’s” too can be a Malay or Bumiputra.

How can non Malay or Bumiputra be Malay or Bumiputra? It is simple. By definition, Malay is one who embraces Islam, live his or her life as Malay with Malay culture. A Bumiputra means son of soil which includes Orang Asli, Malay, Sabahan / Sarawak Ethnic groups and Portuguese. Yea, you heard me, Portuguese are considered Bumiputra too.

If you are Chinese decedents, you will forever be a Chinese if you don’t cross culture / race marriage. Once you are married to Malay of other Bumi status ethnic group, your children would then carry the status of Bumiputra. If you are a Chinese man and married to a Bumiputra, your children would carry the status of Bumi but when your children marries a Bumi, then your grand child will carry the Bumi status. Don’t believe me?

If you go to Sabah or Sarawak, you can see many non Malay Bumiputra, why? It is simple. They are the son of soil. By now I think you must be confused.

Here, let me put is as simple as possible:

Example 1

A=Chinese guy (The use of Chinese is just to illustrate, no racist remark intended)
B=Malay girl (bumiputra)

A+B=C (children from the marriage)

C is still not considered Bumiputra because her or his father is a Chinese decedents.

Let say C is a girl and D is Bumiputra guy.

C+D=E (children from marriage)

Now E is officially bumiputra status, why? Because D (Father) is a Bumiputra guy.

So does this means anyone can have Bumiputra decedents? Yes! Isn’t this just racist? Well it is not racist but more to natural order of life. We don’t want to be like Indonesia where the Chinese or Indian communities being wipe out of their original heritage and race.

Compare to Indonesia, the non Bumiputra or Malays got to keep their identity. They got to speak their language, maintain their culture and more. If you as non Bumiputra and living in Indonesia, you would not be able to keep your natural name at all. Have you heard of an Indonesian Indian called Muthu? Or Indonesian Chinese called Wong? All non decedents of Indonesia such as Indians or Chinese will use names such as Wirdono and etc.

We here in Malaysia have been kind to our non Bumi relatives by giving them citizenships and allowing them to enjoy the benefit of being Malaysia. All Malaysian regardless of your race have the rights for education, business, works and many more.

So is it too much to ask them to respect the Malay and Bumiputra privilege?
